Court and net
Volleyball court dimensions: net, lines and zones
A practical guide to the FIVB indoor volleyball court: the 18 x 9 m playing court, centre and attack lines, front and service zones, free zone and standard net heights.
Court size, centre line and boundary lines
The indoor playing court is 18 x 9 m. The axis of the centre line divides it into two equal 9 x 9 m courts. Court lines are 5 cm wide, and the side lines and end lines are drawn inside the court dimensions.
Attack line, front zone and back zone
On each side, the rear edge of the attack line is drawn 3 m back from the axis of the centre line. The front zone lies between the centre line and that rear edge and extends laterally beyond the side lines to the end of the free zone; the remaining court area behind the attack line is the back zone.
Service zone and free zone
The service zone is 9 m wide behind each end line and extends in depth to the end of the free zone. Under the general FIVB rule, the playing court is surrounded by a free zone at least 3 m wide on all sides; FIVB World and Official Competitions use larger clearances of 5 m from the side lines and 6.5 m from the end lines.
Net height over the centre line
The net is placed vertically over the centre line. Its top is set at 2.43 m for men and 2.24 m for women, measured from the centre of the playing court. This guide describes indoor volleyball; Beach Volleyball uses a separate FIVB court and rulebook.
