Handball statistics: shooting, assists, technical faults and goalkeeper saves

How to read common IHF match statistics for shooting efficiency, 7-metre attempts, playmaking, turnovers and goalkeeper performance.

Published: Updated:

Goals, shots and shooting efficiency

IHF scorer tables list Goals, Shots and Efficiency, with 7m Shots shown separately. Efficiency is a rate, so a player with fewer attempts can have a higher percentage than a higher-volume scorer. Match reports also split shooting by 6m, 9m, wing, fastbreak, 7m, breakthrough and long-distance situations.

Assists, technical faults, steals and blocks

Official match statistics use As. for assists, TF for technical faults, St. for steals and Blk. for blocks. These are event counts, not percentages: they show how often an action was credited in the match report, and definitions should be read within the same competition and statistics system.

Seven-metre and suspension-related columns

IHF reports can record 7m shooting, earned 7m penalties, committed 7m penalties, 2-minute punishments and earned 2-minute punishments. These columns help connect scoring chances and discipline, but they are not interchangeable with goals or total fouls.

Goalkeeper saves and save efficiency

Goalkeeper tables show Saves, Shots faced and Efficiency, and may split saves by 6m, 9m and 7m attempts. Save efficiency is saves divided by shots faced in that table. Always compare the same competition and sample size because role, shot quality and minutes played affect the number.
