MMA fight basics: rounds, referee stoppages and official results

A practical guide to professional MMA under the current ABC Unified Rules: five-minute rounds, one-minute rests, the referee’s authority, and how bouts can end by submission, TKO, KO, decision, disqualification or no contest.

Rounds and rest periods

Under the ABC Unified Rules, professional MMA rounds are five minutes long with a one-minute rest between rounds. A bout may be scheduled for one to five rounds, and the rules cap a contest at five rounds or 25 minutes.

The referee can stop the fight

The referee is the sole arbiter of the bout and the only person authorized to stop it. A stoppage can follow when a fighter is not intelligently defending, cannot intelligently defend, cannot continue safely, or another rule-defined ending occurs.

Submission, KO and TKO

A submission may be recorded after a physical tap, verbal tap or technical submission. A TKO can include referee, corner or medical stoppage; a KO is recorded when strikes leave a fighter unable to intelligently defend.

Decisions, disqualification and no contest

If the bout reaches the scorecards, official outcomes include unanimous, split and majority decisions. The rules also define disqualification, no contest, technical decisions and several draw types for specific circumstances.
